Incredible build Dan! What’s the story behind getting your hands on this FJ?

Thanks, mate. I found it for sale on the internet. It was pretty much a wreck and had been sitting in a paddock in inland NSW for over 25 years left to rot away. It had a seized engine and was totally undrivable.

What work have you done to it since owning it?

I firstly replaced the old F series engine with a later model 2F. At the time I couldn't find a F series engine anywhere and a 2F felt like a good choice with the ease of getting parts and possible upgrades. I rebuilt all of the axles, brakes, wheel bearings, steering, suspension and then sanded and wire brushed the chassis back before rust treating and painting it. I also upgraded the ignition system, converted it to a holley carburettor, replaced the seats, replaced all the door and window seals, repaired and upgraded all of the lighting and wiring to LED. I then found a period correct Thomas electric winch which I rewired and installed a modern winch control box with in cab controls. The list goes on and on and is easy to forget the huge amount of work the rusty wreck needed to get to a road worthy standard…

What do you love most about the car?

The Patina. The natural rust and faded paint colours makes it a real stand out, the patina just couldn't be recreated, its one of the best examples of patina I've ever seen on any classic vehicle. It's also a real joy to drive although challenging at times it can be compared to driving a vintage tractor and you have to keep your wits about ya!

Do you have any future plans for the car?

I would like to do some sort of power upgrade at some stage and have looked closely at adding a turbo to the 2F or doing a V8 engine conversion which would just help keep the old girl moving forward up the steeper hills. I also have a secret build that is going to be put on the tray. Be sure to follow my Instagram to see what it is as I'm sure it will blow everyone’s mind!
