Jack, this is an amazing build, that looks very capable out in the bush, could you explain to us how you got your hands on this 40 series and what you’ve done to it.

Thanks man! I found this Hj47 on Gumtree and had to have it. It was an unfinished project that had most of the custom suspension conversion done, but it didn’t run, steer or stop and just had some basic toolboxes on the back. Me and some friends fabricated up shock mounts, a steering shaft, turbo kit and a front bar. Got the brakes working and tidied up the wiring. I shortened the frame by 300mm and cut the tray flush, then put a canopy on with a 12v setup inside,rooftop tent, fridge and compressor. It had 35inch tyres when I bought it but swapped them out for the 37s on it now.

Obviously 40 series almost by the days are getting rarer and more expensive to find in Australia, do you have any advice for someone who is looking to get their hands on a 40 series?

They are definitely increasing in value and now is the time to hold onto one. My advice would be to have a super close eye on marketplace(Facebook),Gumtree & similar sites. Don’t worry as much about petrol or diesel models but more about body condition as drivetrain swaps are pretty easy on these rigs with a ton of aftermarket support. The early 40s have drum brakes all around and some even have 3 speeds so they might need some part swaps from a later model if you’re going to be doing longer trips in them. There’s still a lot out there still to be discovered on farms and backyards across Australia!
