The summer of 2017 saw the keys of this HJ47 change hands once more.
A thorough inspection found an abundance of red dust throughout, proving this Forty already had many stories to tell. The 150km journey home assured its competence, shortly thereafter receiving some minute tweaks and a full load of camping equipment.
After 4 years of exploring the east coast of Australia in its stock form, and the previous 33 years of who knows what, signs of a good time were appearing. With sights now set on exploring further into our country, it was time to give it a birthday. Body panels were promptly removed and I was soon left with a rolling chassis and a serious lack of space (big thanks to the old man).
The blasting of each panel exposed the scars of a rear-end accident, confirming body filler was also popular in the 90’s. Although slowed, progress continued and was remedied with some new handmade panels (Homs replacement panels).
All the while a busted HJ61 was spotted in the background of a gumtree ad, a message and deposit shortly followed. However, being interstate during a lockdown saw myself and accomplice outfitted in high vis conducting an essential freight mission.
Whilst the panel work ensued, the HJ61 engine and gearbox were removed and rebuilt. Being competent at only finger painting, the final coats were outsourced to ensure they came back shiny. During this time no other component was safe and everything was either new or rebuilt.
The fresh body panels and seals stacked back on with major satisfaction, and then the touring setup began. Many custom products ensured easy access to gear and capacity for long-term remote travel. Also made easy with the great 40 Series community still developing solid products that encourage the reuse of these iconic freedom machines.
Maintaining a philosophy of keeping it simple, mechanical and true to its roots, period correct bolt ons were used like the Warn 8274 high mount, ARB 80’s roof basket/ladder, bull-bar and original long ranger auxiliary fuel tank.
Built to be used this vehicle has continued to serve as a daily driver and touring tool. With my favourite part being the conversations and nostalgia that I experience on the road.
